A beach’s lifeguard chairs are like its fingerprints. Each one is unique to its township. They’re familiar, comforting, and baked into the cultural DNA. 

I’ve always had an appreciation for the Manasquan squad, who vigilantly watch over their visitors. There’s a long history of maritime rescue stations and safety training dating back to the 1800s. Interestingly, Jack ‘more good times’ Nicholson chose to spend his summers

on watch as a lifeguard on Manasquan beaches.

More recently, my dear cousin Anthony heroically manned his post there by saving multiple lives on his very first day of duty. Not every day was as dangerous. He got to enjoy a beautiful workspace and meet the friendliest visitors, including Mr. Springsteen, who chatted him up one sunny day.

You never know who you’ll run into on that golden sand.
